Discover Non-Surgery Chin Fat Reduction
Many people feel embarrassed or unhappy with the fat under their chin, but a double chin can be reduced with a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment known as Kybella®. Denver, Boulder, and other Colorado patients have access to the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that can break down fat cells in the chin and neck area to correct submental fullness.
What is submental fullness?
Fat deposits that sit right beneath the skin underneath the chin are collectively known as submental fat. An excess of this submental fat or fullness is what leads to the appearance of a double chin. It may be something someone has dealt with for their entire life, or it may have developed as time went by, only recently becoming noticeable.
Submental fullness affects people of all genders, and may be caused by genetics, weight gain, aging, or a combination of two or more of these factors. It is important to understand that a person does not have to be obese—or even overweight at all—to have submental fullness. This is why even the fittest of us can often have stubborn pockets of chin fat that do not go away despite strict dieting and exercise.
It is not unusual to have concerns about submental fullness. A 2015 survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) revealed that 67 percent of participants were bothered by the fat under their chin, and that they care about their submental fullness as much as they do about wrinkles and lines around their eyes.
Who can receive Kybella® treatments?
Kybella® is an appropriate treatment for healthy adults over the age of 18 who:
- Are self-conscious or displeased with moderate to severe submental fat deposits under their chin that may be caused by weight gain, aging, and/or genetics
- Perceive their double chin makes them appear heavier or older than they really are
- Have noticeable chin fat that persists despite eating and exercising healthily
- Prefer a non-surgical, less invasive approach to reducing their double chin
- Do not have an infection in the relevant area
What to expect from Kybella® treatments?
After an initial consultation discussing your concerns and goals, one of our team’s injectors will administer Kybella® to carefully selected points under your chin. Its active ingredient, a synthesized version of the naturally occurring deoxycholic acid, works to destroy the fat cells under your chin.
While a patient may experience some common side effects such as bruising, swelling, or numbness in the treated areas, these tend to be temporary and usually resolve on their own within a few days after the session. There is minimal downtime associated with Kybella®, and most patients are able to resume their daily activities after a session.
Each Kybella® treatment session can take as little as 15 minutes, and a topical numbing agent and ice may be applied to the target areas prior to injection. Each patient receives a different number of injections and treatment sessions depending on their chin profile and desired goals, but no one should receive more than six Kybella® treatment sessions—spaced at least one month apart—in total.
About a month after all Kybella® treatments, most patients notice obvious fat reduction and possibly some slight skin tightening in the treated areas. This effect can continue to improve over the next few months, and further maintenance treatments with Kybella® are usually not required.
Another treatment for a defined jawline:
As Kybella® works to reduce a double chin, the injectable Voluma®—a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler—can add volume to the cheeks higher on the face, which provides a subtle lift to pull up sagging skin. The effect, which brings more definition to facial contours by addressing the problem of jowls, can last for two years.
