What is Latisse®?

Latisse® (bimatoprost) is a topical prescription medication that is applied along the base of the upper lashes once nightly. Manufactured by Allergan, the same company that makes BOTOX®, Latisse® is approved by the FDA to stimulate the growth of longer, darker, and thicker eyelashes within 4 months. It is available by prescription only.

How Do I Use Latisse®?

To apply Latisse®, the Denver Dermatology Center recommends the following procedure: In the evening, remove any makeup and cleanse your face. Ensure that your eyelids are clean and dry. Place a small drop of Latisse® on the provided eyeliner brush, and then apply it along the base of your upper eyelashes, just as you would a liquid eyeliner. Avoid getting the solution in your eyes or on the surrounding skin, as it can cause irritation or unexpected hair growth. In the morning, shower or wash your face as usual.

What Results Can I Expect?

Enhanced eyelash growth for our Denver and Boulder patients begins to appear within 4 to 8 weeks, but may take up to 4 months in some patients. During this initial period, you will see a gradual increase in the length, pigmentation, and thickness of your lashes. After lashes have grown to their desired length, you can maintain your results by applying Latisse® nightly 2 or 3 times per week. If you stop using Latisse, your eyelashes will gradually return to their original appearance.

Latisse® Safety and Risks

Clinical trials conducted prior to FDA approval determined that Latisse® is safe and effective for improving eyelash growth when used as directed. Certain patients experience temporary eye redness, dry eyes, or eyelid darkening. In rare cases, the iris may develop permanent brown pigmentation.

Some patients with prior eye conditions are not good candidates for Latisse®, so it is important to talk with the Denver Dermatology Center team, who are knowledgeable about the medication, its application, results, and possible side effects.
